“Our intention, certainly, moving forward is using the continuity to help make sure nothing is diverging in a way that doesn’t make sense, but there’s no insistence upon an overall storyline or interconnectivity in that universe,” she said. “Moving forward, you’ll see the DC movie universe being a universe, but one that comes from the heart of the filmmaker who’s creating them.”
The changes came following the big success of Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” which was largely unconnected from the shared universe. “The movie’s not about another movie,” chief creative officer Geoff Johns explained. “Some of the movies do connect the characters together, like Justice League. But, like with Aquaman … our goal is not to connect Aquaman to every movie.”
The origin Joker movie directed by Todd Phillips has been rumored to take place outside the shared universe. It’s still unclear whether or not Jared Leto who played the antihero in “Suicide Squad” will be back for the solo film. His onscreen female counterpart Margot Robbie, however, is expected to reprise her role as Harley Quinn for future film(s).
“Justice League” is coming out November 17 in the United States. James Wan’s “Aquaman” starring Jason Momoa will follow on December 21, 2018. “Wonder Woman 2” which sees Jenkins reuniting with Gal Gadot is scheduled for December 13, 2019 and “Flashpoint” which focuses on Ezra Miller’s The Flash is set for a 2020 release.
The other new DC adaptations include “Batgirl”. Joss Whedon (“The Avengers”) is attached to direct the movie. He is also hired to do reshoots for “Justice League” after the original helmer Zack Snyder stepped down due to family issues.
A solo movie about The Batman is in the works as well. There have been rumors that Ben Affleck won’t return as The Caped Crusader, sparking speculations that the film will not be a part of the current universe as well.
The DC current shared universe is widely known as DC Extended Universe, a name which apparently started out as a joke. The title of the new DC cinematic banner is expected to be announced “soon-ish.”
