Today’s round up of new trailers includes a very scary-looking horror movie, a new true soldier’s story from the writer of American Sniper and an action thriller about a one-man army against terrorists. The last of those has a Red-Band spot, but all three are intense in their own way. In order of release:
When it comes out: August 11
Who is in it: Miranda Otto, Anthony LaPaglia, Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Lulu Wilson
What it’s about: In this prequel to Annabelle (itself a prequel to The Conjuring), a couple open up their house to a home for orphan girls after their own daughter is killed, but the titlular possessed doll begins haunting the children.
How is the trailer: Plenty terrifying just in the teased scenes alone. And the movie is especially unsettling because it’s children that the doll is going after, including one with a disability. It’s kind of funny to be getting a prequel to a prequel, but considering hororr is the genre where prequels actually tend to work best, maybe this will be the cream of the crop.
What are people saying about the movie: Many critics have already reviewed the prequel prequel, and the buzz is positive. Here are a few blurbs:
“One of those rare sequels that far exceeds the original.” – Perri Nemiroff, Collider
“A marked improvement over its 2014 predecessor … featuring more engaging protagonists and a far less problematic ending.” – Jim Vejvoda, IGN
“Sandburg’s scares are successful. He straddles a nice cinematic line between the measured burn of 1970s auteur horror and today’s hit-and-run shocks tailor-made for the ADD generation.” – Staci Layne Wilson, Dread Central
